You can offer suet all year if you
use the commercially prepared suet cakes found at stores where
bird feeding supplies are sold. This suet is rendered, meaning
that it has been melted and re-hardened, and it stays solid even
in warm weather. During the summer, place your suet feeder in the
shade. Suet feeders designed to discourage starlings have a roof
and can only be approached from underneath by birds that can hang
under the feeder. Nuthatches, titmice, chickadees and woodpeckers
are able to hold on, while starlings and other larger birds have
problems trying to cling.
